Romanby will be full of colour and creativity this weekend as the Women’s Institute’s much-loved Scarecrow Festival returns to the village.
More than 40 scarecrows are expected to be on display, each created by residents, families and community groups competing for the top prize. The event will run from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October, with the Romanby WI Hall on The Close serving as the festival hub.
Visitors can pick up a trail map for £1, enjoy refreshments, and browse stalls at the hall before setting off to explore the village and vote for their favourite scarecrow. The creator of the winning entry will receive a £100 cash prize.
Organiser Samantha Jennings said: “Based on previous years, the standard of the competition is always really high. We’ve seen everything from Peter Pan and Mary Poppins to characters from Harry Potter and modern cartoons. There really is something to delight everyone — and I’m glad the judging is done by a public vote, because choosing just one winner would be impossible!”
All proceeds from the event will go towards the ongoing maintenance of Romanby WI Hall, which is run as a registered charity. The festival is also kindly supported by Broadacres Housing Association.
Visitors are advised to bring cash for maps, refreshments and stalls. For updates across the weekend, follow Romanby WI on Facebook.
