Residents urged to renew garden waste licences ahead of first collection

Residents across North Yorkshire are being reminded to purchase their garden waste collection licence ahead of the annual service restarting in March.

North Yorkshire Council is offering a licence priced at £52 for the upcoming season, which runs from March through to early December. The licence covers the fortnightly emptying of one 240-litre wheelie bin. Households requiring additional bins can purchase a separate licence for each one.

Depending on their location, some residents may receive an equivalent number of compostable sacks instead of a wheelie bin.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for managing the environment, Cllr Richard Foster, said buying a licence in advance ensures collections can begin promptly when the service launches.

“Having a garden waste licence allows residents to dispose of their waste in an easy and cost-effective way,” he said. “While licences can be purchased during the season, residents will need to wait for their licence pack to arrive and be displayed on their bin before collections can start.”

Once purchased, licence packs are typically delivered within 14 days. Full details about the garden waste service, including collection dates and how to apply, can be found on the council’s website at www.northyorks.gov.uk/garden-waste.

Residents who produce smaller amounts of garden waste are encouraged to consider home composting or use one of the council’s 20 household waste recycling centres across the county. The council also offers low-cost compost bins, with further information available at www.northyorks.gov.uk/composting.
