Thirsk Racecourse presents its latest meeting on Friday evening, with a six-race card consisting of four handicaps, a maiden and a novice race.

We kick off with the two-year-olds in a six-furlong maiden (5.25). With a large field of 15 runners, many of which are unexposed, this is a difficult race to judge as it’s advisable to keep an eye on the market in the preliminaries. Brian Ellison’s Mademoiselle Belle could be a main player, while Copperfield might take another step forward and be at the sharp end. Debutant Cosmic Man also should be worth some attention, with a nice pedigree and coming from a yard in form.
A seven-furlong novice for two-year-olds is next (6.02). This is another competitive-looking race with numerous debutants involved, so is tricky to judge accurately, but Ed Bethell’s Haaderr should be at the sharp end having been the close runner-up to a smart horse on his debut. Rebecca Menzies’ Goldie Bear also should be capable of a good run, having run a nice race at York last month for a place.
Race three is a five-furlong handicap (6.35). Ingelby Archie, a course and distance winner, is useful and reasonably consistent, but does have a tendency to disappoint every few runs. As his most recent below-par performance was last time, we could expect him to bounce back to his usual self here, but it might be sensible to look further down the handicap here. The likes of Hover On The Wind might be worth considering, down to a workable mark and with Paul Mulrennan in the saddle, who rode him to his last victory in May.
Next is a three-year-olds’ seven-furlong handicap (7.10). Mick Appleby’s stable are going well at the moment, so his new recruit High On Hope could go well. This gelding was useful for Tom Dascombe and could do even better for this change of scene. Panelli, equipped with first-time cheekpieces, could also run a nice race for George Boughey and be in contention for the placings.
The penultimate race is a mile handicap (7.40). Course and distance winner Hostelry is the sort who is rarely without a chance at all, so she is likely to be at the business end come the final furlong. Without Delay could do better than expected under Jason Hart, and Electric Avenue also could be ready to run for at least a place here.
Finally, a handicap run over a mile and a half concludes the card (8.10). Ed Dunlop’s Arundel’s chance looks obvious, running off the same mark as when a close second last time out at Yarmouth, and it’s unlikely that the extra distance will inconvenience him. If his first-time visor has the desired effect, he could win this. Sam England’s Made All could have a chance of placing at least, given that he is nicely proven over this trip already.
