A new volunteering programme aimed at helping people build confidence and gain practical skills has been launched in Thirsk.

Rural Arts is inviting people aged 18 to 65 from across North Yorkshire to take part in its Stepping Stones Supported Volunteering programme, which will be based at The Courthouse.

The free programme will run over three months and requires a minimum commitment of two hours per week. Participants will receive personalised support while gaining hands-on experience in areas such as marketing, café support and events.

Organisers say the initiative is designed to help people build confidence, develop new skills and become more involved in their local communities.

Stepping Stones forms part of the Get Britain Working Trailblazer initiative and is being delivered in partnership with Hambleton Community Action, Carers Plus Yorkshire and Stokesley and District Community Care Association.

Ellie Stephenson, building and operations manager at Rural Arts, said the scheme offers a positive pathway for people looking to take the next step.

“Stepping Stones helps people take positive steps forward, whether that’s building confidence, gaining skills or meeting new people,” she said.

“Volunteering at The Courthouse is a great way to be part of a friendly and creative community.”

The charity is also keen to hear from people who may not qualify for the programme but are still interested in volunteering.

Volunteers are encouraged to get involved at The Courthouse, which hosts a wide range of performances, exhibitions and workshops throughout the year.

Applications for the Stepping Stones programme close on Tuesday, March 31.
