A new podcast series celebrating the life and legacy of James Herriot has been announced, featuring his son Jim Wight, daughter Rosie Page and former veterinary colleague Peter Wright, now well known from the Yorkshire Vet television series.
The Real James Herriot Podcast is being launched to coincide with the sixth season of All Creatures Great and Small airing in North America this January, responding to growing global interest in the author and the real stories behind his much-loved books.
Jim Wight, son of Alf Wight OBE – the vet and author better known as James Herriot – published his biography The Real James Herriot in 1999. The book offered personal insight, real-life anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories of the man whose experiences inspired generations of readers and viewers.
The podcast was conceived during discussions around Jim Wight’s book while developing the Original James Herriot Tour of Thirsk, which launched in summer 2025. Jim and Rosie Page helped to create the tour, and organisers say its preparation uncovered many previously untold stories which will now be shared through the podcast.
World of James Herriot marketing director John Gallery said: “The idea of the podcasts came up while discussing Jim’s book during the launch of the Original James Herriot Tour. Many new anecdotes emerged during the process, and Jim, Rosie and Peter Wright all agreed to share their memories. We are delighted to be able to share these authentic stories with James Herriot fans around the world.”
The World of James Herriot attraction in Thirsk continues to see rapidly increasing visitor numbers, with more than 40 per cent of guests now travelling from overseas. Organisers say the podcast will help reach millions of international fans eager to hear first-hand accounts of the real people behind the famous stories.
The podcast is available via the World of James Herriot website and will also be available on major podcast platforms including YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon.
