A purpose-built 66-bedroom care home is set to be built on the site of the former Hambleton District Council headquarters.
A planning application for the scheme has been submitted to North Yorkshire Council by LNT Care Developments.
The authority agreed to sell off the site in July after it was no longer needed following the launch of the new unitary council for North Yorkshire.
The three-storey home would offer 24/7 specialist care.
Supporting documents submitted with the application say the home would “provide an important local community service for older people in need of care from within the local community or that have a strong local connection”.
They add: “The care home will have a positive impact on the housing stock in the locality by releasing family homes, which older people typically occupy, back into the market.
“Given the national housing crisis, this is a major benefit to the construction of purpose-built care homes, which in isolation also adds to the housing stock.”
The care home would include a cinema room, hairdressers, gardening rooms and a tearoom.
The documents add: “The care home will generate between 50 to 60 new employment opportunities, which is approximately 48 full-time equivalent jobs which will significantly boost the local job market.
“All our care homes offer career progression and extremely competitive salaries for prospective employees.
“Development of the care home would also make a significant contribution to local economic activity, with a significant number of local suppliers used for the delivery of goods and services in relation to the operation of the care home.”
The proposed care home would have a smaller footprint than the existing council offices.
The home will be set back within the plot and would have a frontage onto Rotary Way, as the main entrance to the site.
The site will include 25 car parking spaces, as well as an ambulance/taxi drop-off area.
Five disabled spaces would be situated close to the main entrance and there would be six electric vehicle charging points.
A large garden area would be created with direct access from the main lounges and most ground-floor bedrooms.
LNT has previously built more than 250 care homes, which it then operates through its sister companies, Danforth Care, Oyster Care and Crystal Care.
The company said it hoped to build the new Northallerton care home within 16 months of receiving planning permission.
