The Richmond and Northallerton MP Rishi Sunak joined young people, volunteers and families to celebrate a year of achievement, service and personal growth at the North Hambleton Scouts Awards.
The event, held at East Harlsey Village Hall, brought together around 30 young people, Scout leaders and supporters for the district’s first awards celebration since 2019. The afternoon marked an important moment for the local Scouting community, recognising the progress, skills and contribution made by young people over the past 12 months.
Members from across the district attended, alongside District Lead Volunteer Mark Turner, County Lead Volunteer Max Butler and other local leaders. Before the ceremony began, Mr Sunak met award winners and their families, as well as the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire Jo Ropner, who is also Honorary County President of North Yorkshire Scouts.
The celebration featured presentations, interviews and performances that highlighted the breadth of opportunities offered through North Hambleton District Scouts, from local community action to wider national and international experiences.
Top awards presented during the day included Chief Scout’s Bronze and Silver Awards, as well as Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, recognising commitment, leadership, skill development and service to others. The event also showcased strong links between the Scouts and other community groups, including the Wombles of Hambleton, who work alongside young people on projects that support the local area while contributing towards Scout badges.
Speaking after the event, Mr Sunak said: “It was a real privilege to be part of such a positive and uplifting afternoon. The confidence, enthusiasm and community spirit shown by these young people was outstanding, and it’s clear how much Scouting helps them grow in character.”
District Lead Volunteer Mark Turner added: “Seeing these awards presented today is a testament to the hard work of our young people and the dedication of our volunteers. We’re incredibly proud of everyone involved.”
North Hambleton District Scouts continues to grow, offering opportunities for young people and adult volunteers across the area from Bedale to Stokesley and Great Ayton to Masham. More information about getting involved is available at northhambletonscouts.co.uk/join.
