Man arrested in Thirsk after high-speed police pursuit

This is the moment North Yorkshire Police officers brought a speeding vehicle to a halt following a high-speed pursuit near Thirsk in the early hours of Sunday.

Shortly before 3am, a silver VW Golf failed to stop for a Roads Policing patrol on the A19 near Bagby, sparking a pursuit through Thirsk and South Kilvington.

The car reached speeds of over 130mph before officers deployed a stinger to bring the vehicle safely to a stop.

Despite suffering four deflated tyres, the driver continued for several minutes before leaving the road and driving into a dead end.

The suspect then fled on foot, even entering a river in a desperate attempt to evade capture.

However, officers quickly apprehended the man – a 21-year-old – and placed him under arrest.

He was detained on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance, drug driving, and possession of a Class A drug.

The suspect remains in police custody while enquiries continue.
