Fire crews were called to Chop Gate on the North York Moors after a dog fell around 10 feet down a disused mine shaft.
The incident happened at 12.35pm on Friday, February 28. A crew from Stokesley, supported by colleagues from Malton including the animal rescue team, were mobilised to reports of a dog that had fallen down a hole.
After what crews described as “a good hike up a hill”, firefighters located Luna, a Hungarian Vizsla, at the bottom of what appeared to be an old mine chamber.
Due to the depth and restricted access, specialist rescue equipment was required. Crews used lighting and line rescue equipment, including strops and lines, to secure Luna before carefully lifting her back to the surface. A triple extension ladder and reach poles were also used to assist with the rescue.
Thanks to the coordinated effort and what firefighters described as plenty of “crew power”, Luna was safely brought back up and reunited with her relieved owners and her patient canine brother, Bruce.
Fortunately, Luna was unharmed by her fall.
