Celebrations went with a bang at Kiplin Hall’s Big Birthday Bash last weekend, as the Jacobean house near Scorton marked its 400th anniversary.
Built in 1625 as the seat of the First Baron Baltimore, George Calvert, the hall has been home to four wealthy families over the centuries. On Saturday and Sunday (August 30 and 31), visitors were transported back to the 1600s as re-enactors filled the grounds with the sights and sounds of the era.
An encampment on the west lawn hosted sword school, pike drills, and musket and cannon fire, while fashion from the period was also on display — from the ruffs and layered skirts of the wealthy to the woollens worn by skilled tradespeople. Visitors even had the chance to meet ‘George Calvert’ and ‘King James I’.
The anniversary celebrations will continue into the autumn, with Kiplin on course to welcome 30,000 visitors this year. Upcoming highlights include Party Frocks and Birthday Cake, a talk by the History Wardrobe on September 18 exploring fashion at birthdays through the ages (booking required).
In October, ‘thanksgiving’ displays will reflect on Kiplin’s connection to the Calvert family and the founding of the state of Maryland, giving thanks to those who have supported the hall over the centuries and today.
Kiplin Hall and Gardens is open six days a week, closed on Thursdays.
