A fundraising campaign in memory of two well-known local men has passed £11,000 following a boost from charity shoot events on the North York Moors.
A JustGiving page set up by Chloe Thornton, from Ampleforth, in aid of Prostate Cancer UK has seen donations surge after members and supporters of the North York Moors Moorland Organisation (NYMMO) presented her with £5,080.
The money was raised across three charity shoot days held on North York Moors estates, as well as at an event hosted by a local farming couple. Around 20 people attended each day, with funds generated through raffles, auctions and donations.
The cause was chosen in memory of two longstanding NYMMO members, John and Richard, who died within days of each other from prostate cancer. Chloe is Richard’s granddaughter.
Her own fundraising began earlier this year with a sponsored head shave to raise awareness of the disease, which she says has affected an increasing number of people she knows.
Speaking about her motivation, Chloe highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, noting that prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men but has high survival rates when detected early.
She also urged men not to avoid checks due to embarrassment, stressing that early action could save lives.
The JustGiving page remains open for further donations as Chloe continues her efforts to raise both funds and awareness.
