With just two weeks to go, preparations are well underway for the 39th annual Hunton Steam Gathering – one of the biggest heritage, vintage and craft fairs in the area.
The two-day event will be held on September 13 and 14 near Bedale in Lower Wensleydale, with organisers promising a fun-filled weekend for all the family.
Run entirely by volunteers, last year’s event raised more than £7,000 for local charities and good causes, despite poor weather. This year, more than 80 volunteers are once again pulling together to deliver the show, which has grown into the largest of its kind in the area.
Nearly 1,000 vintage and classic vehicles will be on display, from motorbikes to steam engines, including more than 30 full-size steam engines and 50 miniature versions.
Alongside the vehicle displays, visitors can enjoy a growing craft and food market, trade stalls, an auto-jumble, and a traditional vintage fairground complete with a big wheel, gallopers and chair-o-planes.
The main arena will host continuous entertainment, including vintage vehicle demonstrations, classic car driving, children’s tug-of-war competitions, and displays by Walworth Castle Birds of Prey and Pennine Carter Bernese Mountain Dogs.
Working demonstrations will also take place throughout the site, including steam and horse ploughing, and a vintage ploughing match on the Saturday.
Catering outlets will serve food and drink across the weekend, including Sunday dinners in the refreshments marquee and a bar offering locally brewed ales. Live evening entertainment is also planned for those camping on site.
The event is held on a 70-acre site five miles south of Catterick, and just six miles from both Bedale and Leyburn. Parking is free.
Entry costs £12 for adults and £6 for children, with under-5s going free.
