An East Cowton-born filmmaker is preparing to shoot his second short film — and is calling on supporters to help bring the project to life.
Stuart Mackie Ellis, who grew up in East Cowton and attended Allertonshire School and Northallerton Grammar School, is producing The Redress of Verely Ambrose through RADARscreen, the production company he runs with his wife, Sophia.
The film, described as a retro-futuristic dystopian drama-thriller, follows the story of Verely Ambrose, who seeks justice after being wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for murder. When she’s finally exonerated and released, she discovers that her “redress” is not all it seems.
The screenplay has already gained early recognition — accepted into the White Rose International Film Festival and the Sunday Shorts Monthly Film Festival, and more recently winning the Silver Award at the Soho International Cinverse Screenplay Awards.
The film will feature an award-winning cast and crew, including Imogen Church, Gillian Broderick, and Absolute Radio presenters Sophie K. and Sarah Champion, with music by Matthew Greasley and PugleLab.
Stuart and Sophia, both actors now based just outside London, are currently crowdfunding the film through Greenlit, a platform dedicated to creative projects.
They have already raised more than £2,000 towards their £5,500 target, which will cover costs such as cast and crew, travel, insurance, and post-production.
“We have had an incredible response so far,” said Stuart.
“The money will pay the for the cast and crew, food and travel, production insurance, props, post-production and film festival submissions. It’ll be tight, but it’s doable.”
The Redress of Verely Ambrose will be filmed over a weekend in late November, with post-production to follow ahead of its planned film festival run in 2026.
