A community has raised thousands of pounds in memory of a respected Hutton Rudby businessman known for his hard work, integrity and kindness.

Friends and family of Tim Lomas organised a fundraising event to support the palliative care team at the Friarage Hospital, who made his final weeks as comfortable as possible.

Tim, founder of Northallerton garage firm Vasstech, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2021 shortly after retiring following more than 40 years in the motor industry. Initially given just three months to live, he defied expectations and fought on for three more years.

Those who knew him said his positivity and determination carried him through the immense challenges he faced. Despite enduring significant pain, he remained courageous and never complained.

In October 2024, Tim was referred to the palliative care team at the Friarage Hospital, where he received ongoing support. Staff later described him as an inspiration who embraced each day with gratitude and resilience.

Tim died in November 2024 surrounded by his close family.

In a fitting tribute to his career and passion for motorsport, a fundraising track day was organised at Croft Circuit by his long-time friend Stuart Clemmet alongside Tim’s family. The event raised more than £2,300 for the Friarage unit.

Stuart said: “Tim employed me at the age of 16. Throughout my life, Tim was not only one of my closest friends but also mentored me and helped me with my life’s challenges.

“Fundraising was an idea I had to remember Tim in a way that many of us had the most special times with him — various motorsport events including the Le Mans 24 Hour, which we attended together numerous times.

“It was also fitting for the funds to go to the palliative care team as gratitude for the care Tim received.”

Tim was married to Pauline and was a devoted father to Katie and Rebecca. He was also a proud grandfather to Darcie and Nancy. Although he did not get the chance to meet Nancy, family members said Darcie’s laughter and energy brought him endless joy during his final years.

Cancer care coordinator Kimberley Almond said: “As a team, we are extremely grateful for this incredible donation.

“It will enable us to continue providing equipment such as stair lifts to our patients and will help us to create memories for loved ones. Without donations, this work would be impossible to continue. Tim was a lovely man who will be remembered fondly by our team.”

Lisa Meehan, manager of Our Hospitals Charity, added: “We would like to thank everyone who helped fundraise such a great amount for our hospital unit.”
