Bedale High School has officially opened its new Sporting Wall of Achievement, a tribute celebrating decades of student success in sport.
The wall is dedicated to the memory of Rebecca Robinson, a former pupil who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident in June 2004, aged just 17.
Rebecca’s father, Peter Robinson, and her sister, Ashleigh Wilson, were welcomed to the school to unveil the wall, which honours the sporting accomplishments of past and present students.
Headteacher Chris Stokes said: “When we came up with the idea to celebrate sporting achievements over the decades at Bedale High School, we never imagined the wall would have such significant meaning to so many.
“It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Peter and Ashleigh to our school today, and importantly to recognise Rebecca’s achievements. Her legacy will live forever in our school.”
Former head of physical education Martyn Coombs, who delivered the eulogy at Rebecca’s funeral, also reflected on her remarkable sporting talent.
“Becky was a very talented student who excelled in athletics, cross country, tennis and gymnastics, and received the Roy Mitchinson Cup for Outstanding Achievement in Girls’ Sport in 2001. Her 800m school record of 2 minutes 30 seconds still stands today, which is quite remarkable.”

Rebecca’s father, Peter, said the family was deeply moved by the tribute.
“Thank you to the headteacher for making this possible. It is such a wonderful tribute to Becky.
“As the words say, ‘one day her record may be broken, but her memory will last forever’.
“Absolutely beautiful, which brought a tear to our eyes. Both Ashleigh and I are so impressed with the development and achievements of the school over the last couple of years.”
