The second phase of footway improvements around Thirsk Market Place is due to begin on Monday (October 26).
North Yorkshire Council’s highways team will be repaving the footway on the southern section of the Market Place, between The Three Tuns and Castlegate.
Works will be ongoing until November 27, when the site will be cleared and made safe for the Christmas period, before resuming in the New Year.
The scheme will take place in sections, starting at The Three Tuns, between 7.30am and 4pm.
Pedestrian access to shops and businesses will be maintained and advance warning signs will be in place.
Councillor Gareth Dadd, division member for Thirsk, said:
“I’m absolutely delighted that sooner than expected we’re able to fund and start these works.
“People can already see the first phase of the improvements on the northern side of the marketplace. Although we encountered some difficulties with underground works, the result has been a fabulous improvement.
“It has been welcomed by many people, particularly those using wheelchairs and pushchairs. It’s long overdue, but very welcome indeed.
“Of course there will be disruption as the work continues, but with up to £3m being invested in improvements around the marketplace, I think it’s something to be welcomed.
“We just ask people to bear with us while the work is carried out. There’s never a good time to undertake a project like this.”
