Richmond and Northallerton MP Rishi Sunak has visited a Great Ayton primary school following its national recognition for excellence.
Mr Sunak visited Marwood Church of England School, which has recently been selected as one of only four primary schools in the country to become a SIAMS Case Study School.
SIAMS (the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) assesses how effectively a church school’s vision and values support pupils, staff and the wider community.
During the visit, Mr Sunak met pupils, teachers and governors before joining lessons to see learning in action.
He took part in the school’s Sports Week activities with Year 2 pupils, who were completing a series of timed physical challenges before using the results in maths lessons to analyse data and create tables and graphs.
The MP was also given a tour of the school and learned about recent improvements, including a new pathway linking the school with neighbouring Christ Church.
Mr Sunak said: “Marwood is a wonderful example of what makes our small rural schools so special. The school’s recent recognition is a testament to the hard work of pupils, staff, governors and the wider school community.
“It was a pleasure to spend time with the children, see their enthusiasm for learning and hear about the work being done to provide them with the best possible start in life.
“I also appreciated the opportunity to discuss some of the challenges facing smaller schools and the importance of ensuring they continue to thrive.”
Headteacher Dorothy Walton said the school was delighted to welcome its local MP.
“We were delighted to welcome our local MP, Rishi Sunak, to school as we celebrated our recent success in being recognised nationally as a SIAMS Case Study School. This is a tremendous achievement,” she said.
“Mr Sunak spent time with our Year 2 children, enthusiastically joining in with a range of time challenges and learning activities.”
