Man dies after being struck by car in Thirsk town centre

A 61-year-old man has died after being struck by a car in the centre of Thirsk.

Emergency services were called to Market Place at about 10.30pm on Sunday following reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a white Mercedes-Benz A-Class outside Nova Bar.

Despite the efforts of firefighters and paramedics, the man, who was from the local area, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old man from Darlington, is assisting officers with their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

A section of Market Place remained closed until 6am on Monday while emergency services worked at the scene and the vehicle was recovered.

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses as inquiries continue.

Anyone who saw the collision, or who may have captured footage on dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone cameras, is urged to contact officers.

Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the Market Place area around the time of the collision and has not yet spoken to police.
