A 26-year-old man has been charged in connection with a rape investigation in Northallerton and is due to appear before magistrates today.
North Yorkshire Police confirmed that the man, from the Durham area, has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at York Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, May 30.
He has been charged with two counts of rape, wounding with intent and aggravated burglary.
The charges follow an investigation launched after police were called to a property in Northallerton at 1.17am on Thursday, May 28, following reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted.
A major police operation was launched, with officers carrying out a high-profile search of the area before arresting the suspect later that evening.
The victim is continuing to receive specialist support.
In an earlier statement, Inspector Rory Sadler, of Hambleton Neighbourhood Policing Team, described the incident as “hugely distressing” for the victim and acknowledged the concern it had caused within the wider community.
Police have also sought to dispel speculation linking the investigation to a separate burglary in the Hambleton area, stressing that the incidents are unrelated.
Two other men, one in his 40s and another in his 20s, were arrested during the investigation. However, both have since been released with no further action after being eliminated from police enquiries.
Officers have reiterated that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident and have described it as an isolated case.
