Woman in her 70s disturbed burglar searching drawers in Thirsk home

Police are appealing for witnesses after a burglar entered a house in Thirsk while a woman in her 70s was asleep inside.

North Yorkshire Police said the incident happened in the Sowerby area of the town on Monday night (May 25).

Officers were called to Kings Gardens at about 10.30pm following reports that a man had entered the property while the occupant was asleep upstairs.

The victim woke after hearing a noise and discovered the intruder rummaging through drawers inside the home.

As the suspect fled the property, he pushed past the woman, forcing her out of the way before leaving the scene.

Police said officers were dispatched immediately and arrived at the address within 15 minutes of the 999 call.

The suspect is described as a man with blonde hair, wearing a green T-shirt and possibly carrying a can of lager.

Detectives are urging anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have seen suspicious behaviour, to come forward.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “We are appealing for witnesses and information following a burglary that occurred on Monday night in the Sowerby area of Thirsk.

“We are carrying out additional reassurance patrols in the area to provide a visible police presence and support the local community.”
