A disqualified driver was arrested after speeding away from police in Leyburn and being brought to a halt by a stinger.
At around 9.50am this morning, officers from North Yorkshire Police’s Richmondshire neighbourhood team were on mobile patrol in Leyburn when they observed a black Audi A4 travelling along the High Street towards the Market Place.
PCSO Elliot Brown said officers carried out checks on the vehicle and were informed it was registered and insured to a female driver, despite a male being behind the wheel.
As officers moved to stop the car, it was seen completing a loop around the Market Place before heading onto Harmby Road and making off at speed.
The vehicle continued towards Harmby as officers followed and additional resources were requested.
The vehicle was later located on the A684 by an unmarked Neighbourhood Support Unit vehicle, which provided updates on its movements to allow further units to position ahead.
A stinger device was deployed successfully outside Bedale Sports Centre, deflating two tyres and bringing the vehicle to a stop. The driver and front-seat passenger were detained at the scene.
Police confirmed the driver was disqualified from driving, had no insurance, and also provided a roadside breath test reading of 30.
PCSO Brown said: “The vehicle was seized for no insurance, and the driver was interviewed at roadside by officers, after which the males had time to reflect on their actions by having a long walk back to Durham.”
