Bedale Community Library is to undergo a major refurbishment aimed at creating a more modern and flexible space for residents.

Work is set to begin shortly at the library at Bedale Hall, with organisers promising a bright and welcoming new-look library designed to have a “wow” factor for visitors of all ages.

The revamped library will feature decorative shelving, colourful new furniture and a dedicated story wall for children, creating what organisers hope will be a more inspiring reading environment.

The project has been supported by a £20,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, alongside additional funding from the Rector and Four and Twenty of Bedale Welfare Charity.

Library trustees have also thanked local tradesmen who are helping to carry out remedial work.

As well as improving the appearance of the building, the redesign is intended to create a more versatile community space capable of hosting a wider range of events and activities in a safe and accessible town centre venue.

Jenny Barrie, chair of trustees at Bedale Library, said the project reflected the important role the library plays in the local community.

She said: “We are delighted to be able to start work so quickly after being awarded these two major grants, and are extremely grateful to all of our volunteers, friends and customers who are supporting us in this major work.

“We know that we are part of the community, as everyone tells us that. But we want to make sure that everyone feels part of that community, and this work will make that happen.”

The library will close to the public for the work from 4pm on Friday, June 12, and is expected to reopen at 10am on Friday, July 3.

Children will then be invited to sign up for the Read to the Beat summer reading challenge in the newly refurbished space on Saturday, July 4.

A special Read to the Beat music party and open morning will also take place on Saturday, July 11, from 10am to noon, giving residents the chance to explore the refurbished building.

During the closure, book loans will automatically be extended and arrangements have been made to continue home library service deliveries.

Alternative nearby libraries include those in Northallerton, Leyburn, Colburn, Catterick and Richmond.

Residents can also continue to browse, reserve and renew books, as well as access eBooks and online services, through the North Yorkshire libraries website.
