A woman has been charged following a suspected arson at a home in Great Ayton.
Officers from North Yorkshire Police confirmed that a woman arrested in connection with the fire on Woodbine Close on April 8 has now been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and burglary.
She has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at York Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday, April 9).
The update follows an earlier appeal after the fire was reported at around 6.20am by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, which brought the blaze under control.
Detectives had been investigating the cause of the fire and appealing for information, particularly from anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area between 4.30am and 6.30am. They also asked residents with CCTV, doorbell footage or dashcam recordings to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Tom Barker, of the force’s Investigation Hub, said: “While we are investigating this fire as arson and it may be of concern to local people, thankfully no injuries have been reported and I am satisfied that it does appear to be an isolated incident and the wider public are not impacted.
“We will continue to work with the fire service over the coming days to establish the full facts and cause of the fire.”
Police are continuing to appeal for information.
Anyone who can assist is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 12260062145.
