Woman arrested on suspicion of arson after Great Ayton house fire

Police have arrested a woman on suspicion of arson following a fire at a home in Great Ayton.

Officers from North Yorkshire Police were called to the incident on Woodbine Close at around 6.20am on April 8 after being alerted by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, which brought the blaze under control.

A woman in her 40s has since been arrested and remains in custody for questioning.

Detectives are now appealing for information as they investigate the cause of the fire, which is being treated as arson.

They are asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area between 4.30am and 6.30am to come forward. Officers are also keen to hear from residents with CCTV or doorbell footage, as well as motorists with dashcam recordings that may have captured relevant activity.

Detective Sergeant Tom Barker, of the force’s Investigation Hub, said: “While we are investigating this fire as arson and it may be of concern to local people, thankfully no injuries have been reported and I am satisfied that it does appear to be an isolated incident and the wider public are not impacted.

“We will continue to work with the fire service over the coming days to establish the full facts and cause of the fire.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
