North Yorkshire Council now one of the most productive in the country, says leader

Cllr Carl Les.

North Yorkshire Council  is now one of the most productive local authorities in the country as it approaches its third anniversary, says the council’s leader.

In a statement to colleagues at this week’s full council meeting, Councillor Carl Les said the milestone marked a significant moment following the creation of the authority in April 2023, when the county’s district and borough councils merged with the former county council.

He described the move as the “largest undertaking of local government reorganisation” in the country, alongside securing a major devolution deal for the region.

Cllr Les said the authority had focused on using its size to deliver better value for money and improve services for residents and businesses.

He added that this approach had now been recognised nationally, with independent public sector consultants IMPOWER ranking North Yorkshire Council as the most productive council in the North of England and among the top three in the country.

The authority has also been shortlisted for Council of the Year at both the LGC Awards and the MJ Awards.

Cllr Les said the recognition reflected the work of council staff and their efforts to deliver for communities across the county.

He added: “Maintaining high productivity and performance standards will help contribute to protecting our frontline services and looking ahead, this will remain a focus for the council.

“This is a good accolade for a council approaching its third birthday.”
