Rishi Sunak MP has praised a long-standing North Yorkshire business partnership that is helping major local employers reduce energy costs while strengthening day-to-day operations.

The Richmond and Northallerton MP visited sites operated by JT Atkinson and Yorwaste in Northallerton alongside Energy Oasis founder Mike Kaye.

During the visit, Mr Sunak saw first-hand how more than a decade of collaboration has delivered practical savings for the established firms operating in the construction supply and waste management sectors.

Discussions focused on how sustained investment in on-site energy systems has enabled both companies to bring down running costs and gain greater certainty over long-term energy expenditure — an increasingly important issue for energy-intensive businesses.

JT Atkinson has invested in a programme of site-wide upgrades, including solar panel installations and modern LED lighting, which have been rolled out across several of its locations. At Yorwaste, similar measures have been introduced across sites throughout North Yorkshire, helping the organisation manage costs while continuing to deliver essential waste and recycling services.

Those involved highlighted that it was long-term planning and steady investment, rather than short-term fixes, that had produced measurable financial benefits. The approach has also supported business growth and helped protect local jobs.

Mike Kaye, founder and director of Energy Oasis, said the visit underlined the value of long-term collaboration.

“It was a real honour to have Rishi visit two of Energy Oasis’ long-standing clients in North Yorkshire,” he said.

“We have been working with JT Atkinson and Yorwaste for over ten years. What began as practical cost-cutting has helped both businesses become leaders in energy efficiency within their sectors.”

Mr Sunak said he was impressed by the commitment shown by all three organisations.

“It’s impressive to see established North Yorkshire businesses working in partnership over many years to improve how their sites operate,” he said.

“This is about practical improvements, careful planning and businesses investing in their own long-term future — and that’s good for local jobs.”
