Officers from North Yorkshire Police have joined colleagues nationwide as a two-week national Commercial Vehicle Operation begins today.
Commercial vehicles make up a significant proportion of traffic on North Yorkshire’s 6,000 miles of roads. Police say that when such vehicles are used inappropriately or illegally, they can pose a serious risk to other road users.
Officers continue to attend collisions and incidents involving commercial vehicles which result in life-changing injuries and, in some cases, fatalities.
The focus of the operation over the next fortnight will be on working closely with drivers and the wider transport industry to improve standards and keep everyone safe. Police say this will involve a balanced approach, prioritising education alongside enforcement where necessary.
During the operation, officers will be working with partner agencies across the north of England at various locations to maximise engagement with the commercial vehicle sector. Checkpoints will be set up at a number of sites, including one operating today near the A1(M).
A key focus of the campaign will be load security. Police highlighted that, across the UK, several recent fatal collisions have been caused by insecure loads, often during unloading.
Drivers, owners and operators are being urged to take every possible step to ensure loads are properly secured. Further guidance is available on the government website by searching for “load security”.
