Two men arrested following early-morning bike theft report

Two men are currently in police custody after an early-morning report from an alert resident led to their arrest and the recovery of stolen bicycles.

The incident began at around 3.10am on Monday, December 29, 2025, when two men were seen loading a bicycle into the back of a white panel van in Aiskew.

A nearby resident was woken by the suspicious activity and was able to note key details of the vehicle, including the registration number.

The information was reported to North Yorkshire Police via the 999 emergency number at 3.16am.

Response officers and the Roads Policing Group immediately began searching the area. A further report was received at 4.02am relating to an attempted burglary at the Co-op store on Leeming Lane in Leeming Bar.

At 4.37am, officers spotted the white panel van travelling from the Market Place in Bedale onto Masham Road.

The vehicle was brought to a safe stop near the A6055 at 4.52am.

Two bicycles were recovered from the van and have since been returned to their rightful owners.

Two suspects — a 51-year-old man from Darlington and a 27-year-old man from the Barnard Castle area — remain in police custody while enquiries continue into both incidents.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage to come forward.
