A countywide Christmas toy appeal has launched once again to ensure every child wakes up to a gift on Christmas morning.
Now in its seventh year, the Reuse Santa campaign invites people across North Yorkshire and York to donate pre-loved toys, games, books, and puzzles in good condition.
The appeal is run by Yorwaste in partnership with North Yorkshire Council and City of York Council.
Donations can be made between November 15 and 30 at all household waste recycling centres. Items must be clean, complete, and in working order — though mains-powered toys cannot be accepted.
Last year’s appeal saw more than 5,000 items, or 30 van-loads, distributed to children and teenagers who might otherwise have gone without a present.
Cllr Richard Foster, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for waste services, said: “Every year, the kind donations from residents ensure hundreds of children receive a gift on Christmas Day.
“With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to affect families, Reuse Santa helps to ease financial pressure while promoting sustainability at a time when waste is at its highest.”
Donated items will be sorted, cleaned, and distributed through local organisations including the council’s early help team, the British Heart Foundation, and the Daisy Chain Project.
Barbara Merrygold, the council’s head of early help, added: “By donating unused toys, you can bring joy to a child and reduce waste. It’s a simple act that makes a huge difference.”
