A housing association is preparing to open a new supported housing scheme for people with learning disabilities.
The scheme, in South Parade, Northallerton, will accommodate local people with additional needs who have been assessed by North Yorkshire Council.
They will live in five flats in a building owned by Broadacres close to the town centre and which was previously leased to the NHS for nurses’ accommodation.
Each person will have their own en-suite flat, with shared communal areas including a kitchen and a living room/diner.
They will be supported on-site by specialist staff from Broadacres’ Learning Disabilities Team, who will be present each day from 8am to 8pm, with an out of hours support also provided.
During that time, each individual will receive one-to-one support based on their own personal plan, with the aim of building on, or learning, life skills which will hopefully result in them living independently in the community in the future. These skills include cooking, cleaning and financial management.
Sarah Beniams, Broadacres’ Scheme Manager for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, said: “Working in partnership with North Yorkshire Council, we have identified a range of people who will benefit from this new supported housing service, including those with autism, others who have been living with their parents but wish to take a step towards independence and someone who is moving to be closer to her mum.
“The scheme’s proximity close to the town centre will be of huge benefit as they learn the life skills which could eventually see them becoming completely independent and moving onto their own accommodation in the future or still receiving housing related support from us but on a much lower level.”
The opening of the new scheme has created two new support worker posts at Broadacres, bringing the Association’s mental health and learning disability support team up to 23 people.
