A man has been arrested after a delivery driver’s car was stolen while they briefly left it running outside a takeaway in Thirsk Market Place.

The incident happened just before 8pm yesterday when the driver went inside to collect some orders and returned a few minutes later to find their vehicle missing.

Officers quickly located the car exiting the A1(M) at junction 48 and followed it until it came to a stop at a petrol station on Wetherby Road in Boroughbridge.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, and further arrested for drink driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance, after blowing over twice the legal alcohol limit at the roadside.

Police reunited the car with its owner within an hour of it being stolen.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Even if you’re leaving your car for just a few minutes, never leave it running. Always lock it and take the keys with you — opportunistic thieves are always on the lookout.”
