Parents reminded to apply for secondary school places before deadline

North Yorkshire Council.

Parents and carers in North Yorkshire are being reminded to apply for secondary school places online and before the deadline.

Applications are now open for children transferring from primary to secondary school in September 2026. The deadline for applications is Friday, October 31.

In North Yorkshire, families can list up to five schools in order of preference on the application form. National Offer Day, when parents find out which school their child has been allocated, will be on March 2, 2026.

Figures from last year show that 90 per cent of families in the county secured their first choice of secondary school, while 96 per cent were offered a place at one of their top three preferences.

Amanda Fielding, North Yorkshire Council’s assistant director for inclusion, said:
“There is always a high demand for school places and we do our utmost to ensure that children are offered a place at their preferred secondary school.
“If parents apply online it will help with the efficiency of the process.”

Parents are also being urged to check the council’s home to school transport policy before making their applications. Transport is only provided to the nearest suitable school with places available where the distance is over the statutory walking distance.

The catchment school for admissions may not be the same as the nearest eligible school for transport.
