Work has begun on a major project to install new lighting at Millfields Park in Easingwold – opening up the popular jogging track, outdoor gym and skate park for safe use during darker hours.
The upgrade will give people of all ages the chance to walk, run, skate or train in a well-lit environment all year round, particularly those who struggle to get outside during daylight.
The scheme was first proposed by Easingwold Running Club in partnership with Easingwold Town Council, and has been shaped by extensive public consultation.
Funding has come from a mix of community fundraising and grants, including:
-
FCC Communities Foundation – £20,000
-
North Yorkshire Sport’s Places, Spaces, People Fund – £10,000
-
Radfield Home Care York & Rural – £5,000
-
Easingwold Running Club – £3,650
-
England Athletics – £1,000
Easingwold Town Council will confirm its final contribution shortly, having overseen the design, consultation and financial management of the project.
Colin Fletcher, chair of Easingwold Running Club, said:
“This project has been years in the making and we’re thrilled to see it finally come to life. The lights will make a huge difference – whether you’re out for a jog, using the gym, or just enjoying the park after sunset.”
The new system will use energy-efficient LED lights designed to minimise environmental impact. The lights will switch on automatically at dusk and turn off at 9pm to reduce light pollution and respect the surrounding environment.
Once completed later this summer, the project will leave a lasting legacy of community effort and collaboration, promoting healthier lifestyles and greater social connection in the town.
