A dog was put down by police firearms officers after biting two people.
The Alsatian-type dog bit a man and a police officer on their legs while out of control.
Officers were alerted to the incident in Bedale at 10.50pm on Friday by the man, who is aged in his 60s, following the initial biting incident.
He had been walking home from the pub on the Market Place when he was attacked by the dog near the bowling club.
Officers located the dog near the fire station at around 11.30pm and repeated attempts were made to bring it under control, during which a police officer was bitten.
The dog managed to get away and it was tracked down to Queen Annes Drive, off Firby Road, at 1.30am on Saturday.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “With a vet due to take 25 minutes to arrive at the scene, a decision was made for a firearms officer to put the dog down due to serious public safety concerns.” 2
The owner of the dog, a 64-year-old local woman, has been arrested for having a dog dangerously out of control which has caused injury to a person.
The injured man and police officer attended hospital for treatment to the bite wounds and receive tetanus jabs.
