£780k water mains upgrade underway in North Yorkshire villages

A major upgrade to water infrastructure is underway in two North Yorkshire villages as part of a wider regional investment programme.

Yorkshire Water has begun a £780,000 scheme to replace 2.3km of water mains in North Cowton and East Cowton.

The work is aimed at improving the reliability of drinking water supplies, reducing leakage and helping to prevent bursts in the area.

The project forms part of a wider £406 million programme to replace more than 1,000km of water mains across the region by 2030, within a broader £8.3 billion investment into infrastructure and services.

Contract partner United Infrastructure will carry out the work, starting in North Cowton on Moulton Lane, West Lane, Raby Lane and part of the B1263. Works are then set to move to East Cowton in June.

Nichola Fairbairn, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said the scheme was part of a “huge upgrade” to the clean water network.

She added: “Once we’re finished in North Cowton and East Cowton, bursts and potential loss of supply in the area will be much less likely, and we’ll be delivering the quality and reliability of service that our customers expect.

“We’ll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption at a minimum whilst we deliver this important work.”

Yorkshire Water says it is prioritising areas most prone to disruption, with similar schemes already completed in locations including Grassington, Bedale and Settle.

Local residents have been contacted about any potential disruption, and the project is expected to be completed during the summer.
