Hambleton District Council is putting the final touches in place to welcome one of the most prestigious races in the UCI Road World Championships to Northallerton next week – the men’s elite time trial.

Northallerton High Street will be taken over with riders from across the globe on Wednesday, September 25, who will cycle through Romanby, Morton-on Swale-and Bedale as they head to the finish line in Harrogate 54km later.

Visitors and residents are being encouraged to check out the road closures and parking restrictions for the race – some of which come into force 24 hours beforehand.

Details can be found here.

The district council is providing extra parking across the town.

Those coming from the north will be directed towards spaces at the former Allertonshire School and Civic Centre in Brompton Road.

For those coming from Bedale or Thirsk there are spaces at Northallerton Town Football Club on Ainderby Road.

The council’s Applegarth car park in the town centre is closed for race vehicles and there will be reduced capacity in the Forum car park – where there will be an extra 20 blue badge parking bays.

There will also be blue badge parking spaces on Elder Road.

All these spaces will be free of charge all day Wednesday.

Councillor Isobel Sanderson, cabinet spokesperson, said that officers were working hard to make sure that everyone had a great experience of the race in Northallerton.

“Northallerton is certainly ready to welcome this race – the town is awash with bunting and we have the car parks ready and waiting for our visitors.

“Maps of all parking provision is available on hambleton.gov.uk and maps will be handed out to visitors on the day.”

The town’s weekly Wednesday market has been cancelled to accommodate the race so shoppers are being encouraged to come along to see the race instead, with the stalls back open for business on Saturday, September 28 and then Wednesday, October 2.

And households are reminded that all bin collections throughout the district due on 25,26 and 27 September will be one day later than normal with Friday collections taking place on Saturday 28 September.

Collections on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 September remain unchanged.
