Man in court over death of teenagers on A61 near Thirsk

A man has appeared in court charged with causing the death of two teenagers in a road accident.

Luke Jack Ridley, 23, appeared at Northallerton Magistrates’ Court this afternoon to face two charges of causing death by dangerous driving and five counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

George Thomas Turner, from Sowerby, and Mason Pearson, from Thirsk, both aged 17, died in a crash on the A61 between Busby Stoop and Carlton Miniott on March 8.

George and Mason were both passengers in a Volkswagen Bora which it is alleged was being driven by Mr Ridley, of Victoria Road, Thornaby when it was in collision with a Ford Focus.

Another two passengers in the Bora, an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, were taken to hospital in a critical condition and later discharged.

Mr Ridley, who was wearing black trousers and a black leather jacket, was not asked to make a plea and the case was adjourned to Teesside Crown Court on January 15.

He was released on conditional bail.

William James Corser, 18, of St Mary’s Walk, Thirsk, appeared in court charged with dangerous driving following the incident.

It is alleged he was driving a Vauxhall Corsa which was in company with the Bora at the time of the crash.

He pleaded not guilty.

He will also appear at Teesside Crown Court on January 15.

He was released on unconditional bail.

Following the crash, the driver and passengers of the Ford Focus, a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman from outside the area were discharged from hospital following treatment.

Their three-year-old daughter and a six-month old son were kept in hospital for observation before being discharged.
