Crakehall marks armistice centenary with Tommy statue

A Hambleton village is paying tribute to the local men who lost their lives in the Great War.

Twelve men from Crakehall went away to fight and never came home.

The village has raised money for a Tommy statue which has been placed in the churchyard.

The statue has been positioned so that a spotlight casts a shadow outline on the church.

Villagers have also raised money for 12 There But Not There silhouettes to sit on the church pews and represent the 12 men who lost their lives.

Ten of the silhouettes were paid for by the Armed Forces Covenant, donated on the basis the village holds a community event.

This Sunday, a service will be held in St Gregory’s Church at 10.45am, which will be attended by local community groups including the school, youth club and Girl Guides.

The school choir will perform Little Poppy Flanders at the service, while there will be a free drink for every military personnel in uniform at the Bay Horse pub afterwards.
