Bedale Town Council website working after apparent hacking incident

A post from the alleged hacker's Twitter account suggesting Bedale Town Council's website had been hacked.

Bedale Town Council’s website is working fine this evening after being apparently hacked by supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The website — bedale-tc.gov.uk — was named on social media accounts purported to be run by internet hackers which are called for the release of Mr Assange, who was arrested last week after leaving the Ecuadorean embassy in London.

A tweet from the account Anonymous Espana included an image suggesting the group had access to the council’s files and had leaked them.

Bedale Town Council said today that it was unaware of any issues with website, which includes details of the town’s weekly car boot sales and its town twinning association, as well as information about town council meetings and councillors.

It is not clear why the site was targeted. Barnsley Council’s site was also apparently hit.

The authority said its site was restored by 11.30am and the National Cyber Security Centre had been alerted.
